Revise Truman Show unit to include more regarding product placement as part of a "immersive marketing" study.
Faculty identified "21st Century Skills" as a need for professional development. Develop a workshop (readings/discussion) for faculty facilitates the "unpacking" of the meaning of terms like media literacy, 21st Century Skills, critical thinking, etc.
Develop a series of journal writes (with an option to publish on a class blog?) that will encourage students to understand the role of media on their lives.
Idea #1: The TRUE MAN SHOW is a vital film by one of my favorite directors, Peter Weir. Can you build an entire Unit out of it? What other texts might you teach along with it? Maybe FEED? Hmmm...
ReplyDeleteIdeas #2: Here. go with the phrase "media literacy education" or just "media education," to include the "structures" (not just "message-centered") element of our media ed work together.
Ides #3: Yes - we have a handout for Friday outlining 18 different teacher-tested classroom activities. This may help shape your thinkig.
"thinking."

Love expanding on the Truman Show unit. Be brave! Blog, sistah, blog! ;)
ReplyDeleteKatie, these are my thoughts & responses to your posts on readings #1 & 2... Wow - your use of quotations from related authors to question and tease out meaning from our texts is wonderfully thoughtful & challenging! Crystal, Wiesel, Momaday, Fussell, Lee, Morrison... I don't think I've ever had a student like you! I love your continuous musings on language... you are a deep thinker and I believe you will enjoy the dialogue & debate as we finish up our readings and try to make sense of and apply what Carr & McLaren put forth. And thanks for the Absolute True Diary quote - I put that book on my "to read" list after you first mentioned it in class! :)
